Asteroids adaptation gets Snow White script writer

Fresh from his script-writing duties on Snow White and the Huntsman (a “gritty” fairytale remake due to hit cinemas in June 2012), Evan Spiliotopoulos has been snapped up by Universal Pictures, to work on the company’s upcoming Asteroids project.

Yes, it’s really happening. The rights to the Atari video game were snapped up two years ago. At the time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice writer Matt Lopez was handling the script, but these things have a tendency to change, putting Spiliotopoulos into the role.
Asteroids, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers: Dark of the Moon), actually does have a plot, surprisingly. The story focusses on two estranged brothers, who must team up to save Earth from an alien race. No, seriously.

No dates, cast or other details for this one just yet, but it won’t be Universal‘s first bizarre foray into video game adaptations – before this one’s anywhere near our shores, we’ll be treated to the company’s interpretation of Battleship, inspired by the Hasbro board game.
