MechWarrior Online Shows What We're Fighting For

Oh, the planets you'll conquer!

Based on the enormous map that showed up on MechWarrior Online's developer blog today, it looks like our giant robot walkers will have no shortage of planets to stomp around on and shoot each other for control of. There's also a brief description of how faction warfare will play out, including the option to sign up with a non-affiliated mercenary corporation or just lone-wolf it and blow up whatever happens to stray into your crosshairs.

The Game: Resurrection, New Mexico

Posted by admin on miércoles, 21 de diciembre de 2011 , under , , , , |

Resurrection, New Mexico

Stranded in a dusty, limbo-like town, a freaky sheriff marching around, a little girl running around the streets, and mysterious messages telling you to stay in your hotel room. This sure is a strange part of Resurrection, New Mexico, especially when you consider the bricked-up wall with Native American symbols preventing your escape! Time to explore a bit and find a way out. This puzzle-filled hidden object adventure game from Media Art, creator of Love Story: The Beach Cottage, has a vibe that sits somewhere between an old western tale and an episode of the X-Files. Only, you know, with more ballerinas and serpent/dragon tails slithering about!

It really bites when you miss your daughter's dance recital. What's even worse is the car accident you get into on the way there. What's even worse than that is the strange hotel room you wake up in and doors that board themselves up when you walk near! As journalist Amy Walters, you're not about to sit on your hands while your daughter needs you, so you break free and start your search, sifting through clues and talking to the unusual inhabitants of this strange town.

As hybrid games of this nature go, Resurrection, New Mexico falls right in the middle of the casual adventure/hidden object category. You'll travel through the more "abandoned" side of Resurrection, talking to people and gathering items you happen to see laying around. You have a bit of freedom to roam where you please, but puzzles that require certain items to complete block your progress, so there's a definite order to things. Hidden object scenes serve up small lists of items to find, and when you're done, you'll get something new to hold onto. Your inventory is where most puzzles take place, so keep an eye on it and try using items whenever you get stuck.

Analysis:

Resurrection, New Mexico walks the tested line of hidden object/casual adventure hybrid games without leaning to either side. It's exactly in the middle of the road, offering few deviations from the formula, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your tastes. The puzzles are largely inventory-based and thankfully trend towards the logical, though anyone who tries fixing pliers with tape will learn a quick lesson in durability!

Resurrection, New Mexico requires a lot of searching, clicking, and, well, guesswork. If the generous hint button wasn't there, you might often lose your way because of a randomly missed fold on a piece of paper or an unusual spot on the wall. Sparkles gently guide your eye to certain places, but there's always something else to find by moving the cursor around and clicking when it changes to a hand. Trial and error are often effective as a brute force tactic, so whether or not you notice the little details usually doesn't matter!

One peculiar omission from Resurrection is voice acting. While most casual adventure games seem inclined to include it, developer Media Art decided text was enough, leaving you to read the game's sparse dialogue on your own. While some players prefer a little aural flavoring, others would rather have silence instead of half-baked actors stiffly reading lines. We're going to call the lack of voiced characters a good thing!
It's a bit quirky in the setting, writing, and presentations areas, but Resurrection, New Mexico still delivers a thoroughly engaging hidden object adventure experience!

The Ones That Redefined Virtual Gaming : Top 10 Video Games of 2011

Posted by admin on lunes, 5 de diciembre de 2011 , under , , , |

Top 10 Video Games of 2011: The Ones That Redefined Virtual Gaming

This year has been one of innovations and even revolutions in the gaming industry, one that has paved the way for the future. Big-name titles came and went, and a select few have become immortals in their own right.
Check out some of the best games of 2011 -- and do remember that this is an awfully subjective subject.

elderscrolls.com: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

No. 10: Battlefield 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iOS)
12 minutes of gameplay footage from the intense military shooter Battlefield 3. Watch the full demo of the new FPS game in this trailer

"Battlefield 3" is the latest war-based first-person shooter (FPS) from developers EA DICE. It was arguably one of the most anticipated releases of 2011, and was positioned as a direct response to Activision and Infinity Ward's "Call of Duty" franchise.

Like us on Facebook
DICE's game boasts ground-breaking advancements in an epic that sees the player assume the identity of a U.S. Marine and fight the enemy in New York, Paris, and Tehran, Iran. The game also featured the debut of the Frostbite 2.0 game engine, one that made the environment and the magnitude of destruction far more lifelike than before. The ANT technology, previously used in EA's FIFA series, has also been put to good use. The player is given an awesome array of fighter jets, helicopters, tanks, armored patrol cars, and other transport options. An aggressive multiplayer mode is also featured that supports more than 60 combatants, making it a game for the ages.

No. 9: Total War -- Shogun 2 (PC)
Shogun 2 Total War Battle Report 1 Trailer [HD]
Developer: Creative Assembly

One of the best real-time tactics-based strategy games of the year, "Shogun 2" takes the player back to 16th-century Japan. Developer Creative Assembly has worked hard on this edition, making it a more manageable experience with focused gameplay and wonderful mechanics, which changes to suit the type of battlefield.

Players must choose from one of nine different clans that inhabit the provinces of Japan (these include one in the limited edition of the game and another as downloadable content). Of course, each clan has its own advantages, compared with the others. For example, the Chosokabe inhabit the Tosa province and can recruit superior archers, while the Date clan control Iwate and can recruit superior no-dachi samurai. The Hojo are greater builders and begin in their homeland of Izu, while the Mori have a long history of naval mastery with their home in the Aki province.

No. 8: Batman -- Arkham City (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U)

Batman returns to the consoles, after his exploits at Arkham Asylum, and this time the stakes are higher. Bruce Wayne will take on an absolute Who's Who list of bad guys, in a purpose-built high-security jail/mental asylum, right in the middle of Arkham City, courtesy of Mayor Quincy Sharp.

A serious game-of-the-year candidate, it is built on the solid foundations of its predecessor, with new and effective melee attacks, improvised bat-gadgets, impressive detective work, and an emphasis on stealth play, all making the game a hugely enjoyable experience. The villains include Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, Dr. Hugo Strange, Calendar Man, and Solomon Grundy. In addition, Catwoman has been made a playable character, with her own heist-focused storyline that pops up at specific points in the game, with equally specific acrobatic-oriented combat moves.

No. 7: FIFA 12 (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac OS X, PSP, iOS)
Watch the amazing new FIFA 12 trailer from gamescom 2011.
Find out more about FIFA 12:

EA Sports' FIFA series is one of the developer's most popular titles. The 2012 edition features improved gameplay, competitive scenarios, updates to club and country lineups -- all of which makes it one of the most anticipated footballing games this year.

The developers have taken the game up a few levels: The career mode is now harder than ever, given the tweaks to the manager's relationships with his players and the media. Team selection, success, and salaries can all affect the individual player's attitude and morale. The press will also pick up on injuries and discontented players, massively impacting performance on the pitch.

Unhappy players can now talk to the press and generate interest from other clubs, which complements the revolutionary new transfer AI. Other improvements to the career mode include the calendar, news-story displays, and news feeds, which will make information such as upcoming events, transfers, and rumors more accessible.

No. 6: Rage (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
"Uprising" is the new trailer for RAGE, the highly anticipated shooter from id Software!
"Uprising" tells the story of your epic journey through RAGE

ID Software's Rage, with its postapocalyptic setting, may feel like "Fallout 3," but, in reality, the new game is anything but that. The world is somewhat similar to that of George Miller's cinematic classic "Mad Max" series starring Mel Gibson, and it is set in time following the impact of Asteroid 99942 Apophis. The game features the voice talent of well-known actors such as John Goodman and Tara Strong.

Players have the ability to enhance their cars with various items and upgrades gained from completing races. However, the game also features role-playing elements, which includes an inventory and looting system and a very well-refined FPS feel. The game has two multiplayer modes -- Road Rage and Legends of the Wastelands.

No. 5: Uncharted 3 -- Drake's Deception (PlayStation 3)

Rejoin Nathan Drake in one of the most epic modern-day adventures of the year. After the hugely successful "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves," developer Naughty Dog takes Drake to the fabled "Atlantis of the Sands." The protagonist's moves have been captured with an interactive cinematic experience, drawn from Hollywood, and they are sights to behold, as he makes his way through the Rub' al Khali Desert, in search of the legendary lost city -- the Iram of the Pillars. What's more, Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher also return. Other improvements include online multiplayer support and stereoscopic 3-D visuals.

No. 4: Gears of War 3 (Xbox 360)
The remains of Delta Squad make their last stand in the shooter game Gears of War 3 in this gameplay demo straight from E3 2011

"Gears of War (GOW)" fans will know the stakes are as high as it can get now. "GOW 3" is all about a human race on the verge of extinction at the hands of the Locust and the newly introduced Lambent (Locust mutated by exposure to a liquid known as Imulsion). In fact, so dire is the situation that women have also joined the fight for survival. The game picks up where it left off last time -- when Marcus Fenix and his COG forces were compelled to destroy the Jacinto plateau, which was the last major city on the planet Sera, since the appearance of the Locust on Emergence Day, 17 years earlier, to flood the locust tunnels and slow the spread of the Lambent.

No. 3: Deus Ex -- Human Revolution (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac OS X)

The game is set in 2027, which is 25 years before the first title of the series, at a time when unscrupulous multinational corporations have developed their operations beyond the control of national governments.
The player will follow Adam Jensen, whose body has undergone painful augmentation following an attack on Sarif Industries where he was critically injured. Now Jensen is a deadly weapon and more than just an ordinary man.

The game will take place in futuristic Montreal, Detroit, and Shanghai. The player will be able to upgrade and improve Jensen's abilities in four different groups: stealth, social, hacking, and combat. The game also uses a new regenerating health model. This change was made because the developer did not want players to get into a situation where they were unable to progress due to low health and would be forced to hunt for med packs and food.

No. 2: Call of Duty -- Modern Warfare 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii)

Play MW3 MP first, compete in the $1 Million tournament sponsored by Xbox 360, incredible live events, Sept. 2nd & 3rd in LA.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" was also one of the most anticipated games of the year, and, like EA's FIFA series, a veritable cash cow for developers Activision and Infinity Ward. Although 2011 was special because the series, perhaps for the first time, was given some sort of competition by "Battlefield 3," it still lived up to all expectations, with a gripping storyline that followed Capt. John Price, Soap MacTavish, and Vladimir Makarov.

Two weeks before the release of the game, it was reported that half the PC version had been uploaded online, after being stolen from a warehouse in Fresno, Calif. Investigators hired by Activision have been searching torrent Web sites for traces of the game, in addition to visiting people with illegal downloads and offering them a simple choice -- either remove it or pay a fine of $5,000.

No. 1: The Elder Scrolls V -- Skyrim (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
We're pleased to share the first ever in-game trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the next installment in The Elder Scrolls series from award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3, Bethesda Game Studios

"Skyrim" is the fifth installment in Bethesda Softworks' long-running fantasy action/role-playing game series. Skyrim is the name of the region just north of Cyrodiil, the location where "The Elder Scrolls IV" was based and is within the fictional world of Tamriel. Did you know that among the nine provinces in Tamriel, Skyrim was the first to boast a human settlement? Actually, the Nords settled in that area.

Although it has been more than 15 years since "The Elder Scrolls: Arena" was released, the game still looks as fresh as ever. The main story, set 200 years after the events in "Oblivion," revolves around the player's efforts to defeat Alduin, the firstborn of Tamriel's primary deity Akatosh. Alduin is prophesied to destroy the world. "Skyrim" was first announced at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles last Dec. 11.

'Resident Evil Revelations'. Nuevo tráiler sobre su historia

'Resident Evil Revelations'.

Posted by admin on jueves, 1 de diciembre de 2011 , under , , , |

Review: The Adventures of Tintin

Review: The Adventures of Tintin

The Adventures of Tintin

Ah yes, the movie games. For every G-Force there is a Thor. For every Rango you have a Megamind: Ultimate Showdown, and for every Captain America a James Cameron's Avatar: The Game.

Like that last one, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is another Ubisoft licensed game based, for the most part, on the new Spielberg movie. But does it manage to offer a better time for players this time around?

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (PC, Xbox 360 [Reviewed], PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS)

Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier

Publisher: Ubisoft

Released: October 20, 2011 (EU); December 6, 2011 (North America)

MSRP: €49.99

At its heart, Tintin is not so much a children's game as it is somewhat of a throwback to the old 2D Prince of Persia and Another World games. The vast majority of the game sees you controlling the boy reporter with his questionable fashion sense as he side-scrolls his way from room to room.

The basic trappings of platforming are all here. Jump, climb up ledges and ladders, wall jump off conveniently placed walls, or even hit a baddy with a few punches. The platforming itself is a joy to play, with just the right mix of cartoon and realistic physics to make it feel like you're really in the world of Tintin. Combat often offers you the choice to go in as a brawler, or to sneak around enemies and instantly take them down from behind.

Occasionally you'll come across enemies who shield themselves with an armor suit or an umbrella, requiring you to use throwable objects like beach balls and explosives or luring the enemy to a slippery section on the ground, making him go "wee-wee-wee-wee-boing!" If you just want to pummel enemies head on, then in most cases you can, but there's always the option to take a more

The 2D sections use some clever 3D to give you access to hidden paths for collectible Golden Crabs and make it feel like the world has some more volume than it appears to have. Whether you're a kid or an adult, these sections are a blast and thankfully they'll have you occupied for most of the game.

At other times you'll move out of a 2D section to follow a corridor in 3D, and this is where you notice that the game is much better off with its 2D gameplay. It's meant to switch the perspective around a bit and keep things varied, but none of these sections ever add anything other than the obligatory "run from danger towards the camera" bit. While the swap to playing Snowy can be fun to play here and there, it feels more like he just had to be put into the game in some fashion -- sniffing paths and exploring sections Tintin doesn't fit in -- than that he's an integral character.

Likewise, there are some plane flying levels where you'll evade obstacles and occasionally shoot at rocks or enemies. These levels sadly never offer anything that is solid in gameplay, expands upon the story or the world of Tintin, and quite frankly the flying was done a lot better in the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole game. A few simple swashbuckling sections can take a little bit to figure out how to work the controls, as the analog stick suddenly moves your sword while your character is on rails. Slightly more entertaining are the various driving missions where you'll alternate between driving your bike and shooting at vicious Arabs/Berbers from the bike's sidecar.

None of it is terrible to play, but neither will it blow you or your child's mind. It's just there to spice things up from the platforming and break the inevitable repetition, and at least it does that well enough. Still, the entire journey through the game's "Tintin" mode, in which you play through the movie's events, is an enjoyable and very family-friendly one. There's no drinking, no blood, and defeating enemies with retarded AI will just make them lie on the ground with their butt up in the air.

Beyond the "Tintin" story mode, there's a challenge mode where you can play some more of the plane, swashbuckling, and sidecar sections. This mode also lets you use Kinect if you have the Xbox 360 version of the game, which offers some good family fun. Swashbuckling lets your inner child get its due, with on-screen prompts for where to hold your arm to block an incoming blow and flapping your arms around to slash at pirates in different directions.

The sidecar and plane challenges are controlled by holding your arms out as if you're holding the handle bars or a steering wheel, respectively. The plane's shooting challenge is brilliant, though, since you can shoot down enemy planes by moving both your hands back and forth. The Kinect functionality doesn't offer enough to buy it for this alone, but if you're wondering which version to pick and you have Kinect, the Xbox 360 version is definitely the one to get.

Tintin also has a very expansive co-op mode where Ubisoft Montpellier seems to have gone all out with the craziness. After the conclusion of the movie's story, Thompson and Thomson accidentally hit Captain Haddock in the head and this cues a wonderfully bizarre dream state for the drunken captain. Here you'll unlock level by level by playing through weird alternate versions of the game's locations, in which enemies make reflective remarks on being inside a dream.

These co-op levels are of the 2D platforming kind and you'll have access to some new attacks like Tintin's hookshot that never appears in the story mode. You can choose to play it solo if you want, but to get all the collectibles you'll sometimes need a different character or a co-op partner, plus it's more fun to play it cooperatively. You'll also get a chance to play some of the side characters who each have their own special ability.

Although you can probably breeze through Tintin's main story mode and spend an hour or two completing all the challenges, the co-op mode will offer at least a bunch of hours worth of extra content whether you play it by yourself or not. Moreover, the game does a great job at giving you that Tintin vibe and atmosphere of boyish adventure, despite the graphics reflecting that somewhat creepy look the characters have in 3D.

It should be noted that Tintin can also be a bit of a dick in this game, though. He'll just barge into places without permission and steal other people's property without so much as a blink of an eye. If a servant is just there to protect his master's property he'll only get a black eye for his trouble. Or worse, be set on fire. I also don't really understand this obsession with having Tintin and enemies end up with their butt in the air when they are knocked out -- in various positions -- but c'est la vie.

Putting that aside, there's a lot to enjoy in this game. The Adventures of Tintin may not be a fantastic game, but as licensed games go it's far more than decent. The different modes and variety in gameplay do not always reach the same level of quality, but the majority of it is a lot of fun to play for kids and adults alike.

Final Verdict:

7.0

Very Good:
7s are well-above average games that definitely have an enthusiastic audience within their *genre*. Some might lack replay value, could be too short, or has are some hard-to-ignore faults. Nevertheless, the experience is still very fun.
