Microsoft Wants New Exclusives For 'Current, Future Xbox Generations'
Microsoft Wants New Exclusives For 'Current, Future Xbox Generations'
Platform holder looking to add 'new blood' to AAA stable.
Microsoft Game Studios is looking for producers to help it find and develop exclusive new AAA franchises to push Xbox 360 and it's next-gen successor, according to new MGS job listings."MGS has a number of successful core franchises: Halo, Fable, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War. Our job is to add new blood to this stable of AAA franchises. We have huge ambitions for what we want to accomplish, and we need a great producer to be able to help us get where we want to go," reads one of the ads - for a producer.
One of those titles will be Crytek's Kinect hack-'n-slash, Ryse, with another listing looking for someone to work solely on the in-development title.
Other future AAA Xbox-exclusive games are unlikely to deviate too far from the console's traditional genres though, with candidates urged "to have a thorough understanding of games in the genres we are working in: primarily Shooter and Action-Adventure."
Elsewhere, Microsoft is looking for developers for it's Connected Experience Group to expand on free-to-play launches such as Age of Empires Online. "The launch of Age of Empires online is just the first stage of our plans for this portfolio," reads the ad.

Five Indie Games to Watch For
Five Indie Games to Watch For
It's consistently impressive how many small game developer studios with meager budgets and limited resources are cranking out such awesome games. Some of the most intriguing and innovative titles to launch this year hailed from the indie scene, and there's a lot of good stuff cooking just below the radar. Looking ahead at 2012 and beyond, quite a few sexy indie games are on the horizon for the PC. Here are five gems you don't want to miss out on when they launch.
Hawken
Hawken's ultra detailed cockpit HUDs and thundering sound effects deliver the satisfying heft of thumping around in a big metal death machine, but the punchy gameplay doesn't get too bogged down in simulation. These mechs can zip around fast when they need to, and much of the action takes places in the skies as you riddle opponents with bullets and send volleys of rockets up their tailpipe. Think Halo instead of MechWarrior, and you get the gist of the upbeat, strategic pacing the developers are going for.
What's most impressive about this ambitious game is how amazing it looks. Indie titles often get a rap for leaning heavily on retro or simplistic graphic styles, but Hawken rivals some of the best work cranked out by large AAA teams. Considering Adhesive Games is only a small studio, the jaw dropping combat environments and attention to realistic details is a sight to behold. This one has a ways to go until release, but shoving spoonfuls of fiery hell down opponents' throats with giant mounted robo-guns is going to be a real trip when this baby launches. It should be interesting to see what other game modes are woven into the mix as well as any possible single-player components.
Legend of Grimrock
Your band of adventurers starts off imprisoned in the deep labyrinth beneath the nefarious Mt. Grimrock, and the step-by-step trek to escape through winding corridors and deadly chambers pits you against all manner of traps and evil beasties alike. Each of your four party members can be customized with combinations of different classes and races. Feel like making a minotaur wizard or a lizardman thief? You can totally do that. Gear you've picked up can be dragged and drop between characters' inventories, and there's an abundance of weapons and secret goodies to uncover. Throw in a ton of monsters to slay, loot to score, and a cool rune-based spell system, and it's dungeon thrashing time. Here's to what's shaping up to be a slick revival of an oft-neglected gaming genre.
The Witness
The curiosity to learn more about your uninhabited surroundings, how you got there, and how you can escape drives the adventure. Uncovering voice recordings left by the island's creator offers some clues, and intuitively interacting with and studying your surroundings mixes with the game's unusual puzzle elements. Blue computer panels are scattered around the island's seven main areas, and each holds a maze-puzzle to solve. These seemingly simplistic conundrums are often tied to the world around them, requiring careful scrutiny and examination of each area in order to complete them. The final game will have over 350 puzzles, and they're grouped into different themes connected to the areas you find them in.
Even with placeholder graphics, The Witness delivers a captivating world to roam about in, and the intrigue that surrounds the place is part of the allure. With all the main puzzle elements in place, Blow has beefed up his crew to rework the game world and add more polish to the overall design in preparation for the game's launch sometime next year. Watch for some big, brain-boggling things from this ambitious puzzle effort.
Catapult For Hire
The main campaign has you lugging your huge catapult around the land taking on jobs for clients. This earns you money that lets you upgrade your rig, unlock new kinds of things to fling with it, and construct a mighty stronghold to store and protect your arsenal. Money shouldn't be too scarce, since it seems the wacky local citizens will have plenty of tasks for you to accomplish, ranging from smashing castles and slaying tentacle monsters to tracking down ancient artifacts and finding creative ways to clean up an underwater oil slick.
Then there's catapult fishing, which might just be the coolest way to fish -- short of using dynamite and chainsaws. Wrangling fish for extra coin requires special lures for various types of fish. Attaching other unique parts and munitions to your rig opens up a whole new world of uses for the thing too, and this upbeat indie's well-rounded approach aims to showcase just how far you can push the creative envelope with a giant war machine.
SpyParty
In the role of a spy, you must act with extreme caution as you proceed with your mission. Make any moves that give away your human identity to the ever-vigilant assassin, and you're dead meat. To this end, you have to strike a balance between blending in and faking out your opponent. You have to engage in banter with computer characters and move around the room inconspicuously while planting bugs, stealing items, and working with double agents. As the assassin, you'll study the bustling room carefully and watch for any telltale signs of your human opponent. You only have a single bullet to pump into your quarry, so you have to be 100 percent positive before using it or the game ends.
It's a fascinating and intense exercise that's going to get a lot more dynamic and complex as the game moves closer to completion. SpyParty is in Beta now, and many new elements are planned to be added to both the spy and assassin roles. Expect a total visual makeover too, since all of the current artwork is placeholder.

Story
Arielle and her cat, Bast, spend a pleasant afternoon in the forest. Bast, being free from the usual four walls of their home, can’t stay in one place. He runs around playing with everything that moves and most of things that don’t too. In his haste to enjoy everything, he ends up getting away from Arielle. He starts to hear her calling for him, but the forest is such an interesting place. There are so many things, so much space. Some little creatures challenge him. Bast pursues the little fellows. It feels great to run in the forest.
He is about to catch one of them. He jumps to grab it but he fails. He falls on top of some old stones. Something breaks under him. A cold breeze ruffles the trees chilling him to the bones. A smoke rises forming a shadow. The shadow gains form and then matter. Someone, something hovers above him. Some ancient foul-smelling thing that nails him to the ground. Bast is unable to move. Nearby, Arielle calls for him. The thing, the Spirit, turns around. As Arielle comes closer, the Spirit flies in her direction and envelops her. Bast hears the muffled screams of Arielle. They grow fainter as the spirit disappears in the forest.
Bast is alone. The sounds of the night emphasize that feeling. Arielle is gone, and it is his fault. He realizes that the once pleasant forest became a strange and dark place. He starts running, hoping to help her. He fears it is to late.
And so it starts…

Better to watch than to play: Jurassic Park: The Game
Better to watch than to play: Jurassic Park: The Game
You might go into Jurassic Park: The Game thinking it's a basic adventure game, something more like the rest of developer Telltale's line-up. You'd be wrong. It's much less. The quintessential example of an interactive movie, Jurassic Park is a mini-series set during and after the events of the first film, but with a few button presses thrown in every now and then to make it feel as if you're doing something. The story is mildly interesting and feels like a step up from the unnecessary third film, but there's simply too little gameplay.
The plot of Jurassic Park: The Game describes what happened after the events of the first film. It turns out a group of unlucky survivors was left on the dinosaur-infested Isla Nubar after Jeff Goldblum and friends escaped. A corporate spy, a dinosaur vet and his 15-year old daughter, a scientist, and the mercenaries sent there to save them all make up this second crew. It's your usual ragtag group of misfits, though of course they don't all make it to the end.
The game spans four episodes, but this is not an episodic release; the entire game is available for one price. The story follows a familiar trajectory—characters fight, switch sides, and die, all the while attempting to avoid being swallowed whole by a T-Rex. You don't learn much about any of the characters and they all play a pretty well-defined role—the rebellious teenager, for example, is rebellious. The Michelle Rodriguez-style character fills the role of every character that Michelle Rodriguez has ever played.
It's not the characters or the story that let the game down. The story itself can even be fun to watch. The problem is that sometimes you're asked to do something, and it's never enough.
Jurassic Park: The Game is made up mostly of quick time events. When a raptor chases you, you'll need to hit the right series of buttons to escape. If you're hiding from a T-Rex, you'll have to hold the cursor at just the right spot to steady yourself and be still. If you fail to do so, you'll start over and the game will ask you to do the same thing again. If you fail enough times, the sequence will get a little easier. There are some thrilling scenes in the game, but this style of gameplay ultimately robs them of any actual emotion or scares. You can't even fully enjoy watching the game, as you're forced to keep your eyes on the button prompts.
Even worse are the scenes that feel like an adventure game. The few puzzles you'll come across are ultimately too simple to be challenging, while the investigation sequences don't give you much to explore. You just look at stuff and then the story progresses. You don't even have an inventory or any items to find and use. It's all simplified to the point that the actual "game" aspects feel out of place. This an experience that's more fun to watch than it is to play.
